Denroy Fable, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Connecticut 2023

HARTFORD, CT – Denroy Fable, 40, of Hartford, is facing up to 15 years behind bars after a federal jury found him guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The verdict, delivered Thursday, caps a trial that exposed a pattern of criminal behavior stretching back years, and a brazen disregard for the law even while under court supervision.

The case stemmed from a DEA-led investigation into a Hartford business at 136 Barbour Street, operating under the curious name “The HOLE Ex-Con 360 the movement.” Authorities suspected the store was a front for narcotics trafficking, and undercover buys in October 2022 confirmed those suspicions – netting marijuana purchases. But the real heat came on October 5, 2022, when investigators raided the location.

The search wasn’t just about weed. Investigators seized a cocktail of drugs: crack cocaine, psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, heroin, synthetic opioids, fentanyl disguised as oxycodone, and MDMA. Alongside the drugs, they found packaging materials, cash, and five handguns. Crucially, a loaded .380 semiautomatic pistol was discovered in the pocket of a jacket hanging on a shelf – a jacket belonging to Denroy Fable. Forensic analysis confirmed his DNA was on the weapon.

This wasn’t Fable’s first rodeo with the law, or firearms. His rap sheet includes state convictions for criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit. He also previously served time in federal court, sentenced in March 2019 to 37 months for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon, *and* for dealing cocaine and crack. He was released from prison in August 2020, and was still on supervised release when he was caught with the .380 in October 2022 – a clear violation of his court-ordered conditions.

Prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorneys A. Reed Durham and Brendan J. Keefe, will now seek sentencing for Fable, who has been detained since the October 2022 raid. Beyond the potential 15-year sentence for the gun charge, Fable faces additional penalties for violating the terms of his supervised release, meaning his time in prison could be significantly extended. The DEA’s Hartford Task Force, along with the Hartford Police Department and ATF, conducted the investigation, with support from the Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory.

The DEA Task Force is a collaborative effort, including personnel from multiple Connecticut police departments: Bristol, East Hartford, Enfield, Manchester, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, Windsor Locks and Willimantic. This case underscores the persistent problem of repeat offenders and the flow of illegal firearms onto Hartford streets, a challenge law enforcement continues to grapple with.
