Denver Felon Alvin Madison Caught With Loaded Gun

DENVER – Alvin Madison, 46, of Denver, is facing federal consequences after a jury found him guilty of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction stems from a traffic stop last April that exposed a pattern of disregard for the law by Madison and his associates.

The bust unfolded on April 19, 2023, when Colorado Parole officers were tracking fugitive Dion Avila to an apartment complex. Officers observed Avila entering a vehicle alongside Madison and another man before they drove off. Denver Police quickly pulled the vehicle over, initiating a search of the occupants. It didn’t take long to find trouble. A pat-down of Alvin Madison revealed a loaded firearm tucked into his right front jacket pocket, along with a high-capacity magazine containing 24 rounds of ammunition in his other pocket.

The situation didn’t end there. A search of the vehicle uncovered another firearm on the rear passenger floorboard, later linked to Dion Avila, who has since pleaded guilty to possessing it. All three men – Madison, Avila, and the driver – have prior felony convictions and have already served time behind bars, raising questions about the cycle of violence and re-offending in the city.

“Keeping repeat violent offenders off our streets is a critical component of keeping our communities safe,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado Matt Kirsch. “It is illegal for convicted felons to possess guns and ammunition, and we will vigorously prosecute repeat offenders who continue to arm themselves.” The prosecution highlighted Madison’s prior attempted murder conviction, painting a picture of a dangerous individual who posed a clear threat to public safety.

ATF Special Agent in Charge Brent Beavers lauded the collaborative efforts of the RAVEN task force, stating, “This case exemplifies the incredible work being done…in our efforts to combat violent crime every day.” The RAVEN task force, a multi-agency operation, played a crucial role in the investigation, from the initial arrest to the federal prosecution that ultimately led to Madison’s conviction.

The case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a comprehensive program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through partnerships between law enforcement and local communities. Chief Judge Philip Brimmer presided over the trial. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Celeste Rangel and Dorothy Wilson led the prosecution, with assistance from the Denver Police Department and the Colorado Department of Corrections Parole Fugitive Unit. Case Number: 23-CR-00240. The sentencing date for Alvin Madison has not yet been announced.
