A Colorado man has been sentenced to five years of probation for failing to pay child support, according to the United States Attorney’s office in South Dakota.
Joe S. Romero, 43, of Denver, was sentenced on October 21, 2013, by U.S. District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier.
Romero was charged with Failure to Pay Child Support after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 8, 2013, for failing to pay his past due child support.
At the time of his indictment, Romero had not made a child support payment since May of 2011 and had accumulated past due child support obligations.
Romero was ordered to pay $200 per month for his minor child beginning January 7, 1993, but had failed to make any payments since May 2011.
He was sentenced to five years of probation, a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $31,601.69.
Romero had been in custody for five months prior to sentencing and was released from federal custody.
The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright.
