Deonte Griffin, Armed Robbery, Ohio 2017

An Akron man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the armed robbery of a Dollar General store in Akron, Ohio. Deonte Griffin, 29, was sentenced to 144 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent.

Griffin previously pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act robbery, use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The armed robbery occurred on August 30, 2017, at the Dollar General located at 901 Copley Road in Akron.

According to court documents, Griffin used a firearm to rob the store and possessed a .25-caliber pistol and ammunition, despite a previous conviction for aggravated robbery that made it illegal for him to have a firearm.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program was reinvigorated in 2017 as part of the government’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Henry F. DeBaggis following an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Akron Police Department.
