Deptford Bandit Sentenced For Robbing Six Banks In NJ & PA

Camden, N.J. – The Deptford Bandit has been locked up for his brazen bank heists across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Michael A. Fanelli, also known as ‘Michael Carducci,’ 37, was sentenced today to 37 months in federal prison for robbing six banks in a spree that terrorized the region between June and September 2015, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

Fanelli’s reign of financial fear began on June 2, 2015, at Cornerstone Bank in West Deptford, New Jersey, and ended with his capture following a bank heist at National Penn Bank in Florence, New Jersey, on September 24, 2015. During this time, Fanelli hit five banks in New Jersey and one in Pennsylvania, always demanding cash from tellers with what appeared to be a firearm.

On July 28, 2015, he struck at the same Susquehanna Bank twice within a month, showing no fear as law enforcement closed in. The final straw came on September 24 when Fanelli was followed by officers to his residence and taken into custody without incident.

In addition to his prison term, Judge Reneé Marie Bumb sentenced him to three years of supervised release after his release from prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin C. Danilewitz represented the government in this case.

U.S. Attorney Fishman praised the FBI’s South Jersey Resident Agency for their work on the investigation, along with the West Deptford, Harrison Township, and Florence Township police departments, Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Pennsylvania State Police for their invaluable assistance.

Fanelli’s defense was handled by Assistant Federal Public Defender Lisa Lewis Esq. This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who prey on innocent citizens through violent crimes.
