Derrick Shelbia, 40, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison for 20 years after being sentenced for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon—a charge stemming from a violent crime wave that terrorized Ascension and East Baton Rouge Parishes in late 2016. U.S. District Judge Brian A. Jackson handed down the sentence, marking the end of a federal prosecution that targeted one of the region’s most dangerous repeat offenders.
Shelbia pleaded guilty in July 2017 to the federal firearms charge, a crime that carries steep penalties when committed by someone with his history. A documented felon due to prior convictions for multiple armed robberies, Shelbia was legally barred from possessing any weapon—yet he was caught armed during a month-long rampage that included armed robbery and vehicle theft. His crime spree came to a halt only after law enforcement tracked him down in a stolen car taken during one of the robberies.
The arrest was the result of a coordinated dragnet involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Baton Rouge Police Department, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police. Investigators tied Shelbia to multiple incidents, using forensic evidence and surveillance to build a case that exposed his pattern of violence and disregard for the law.
Acting U.S. Attorney Corey Amundson didn’t mince words: “Defendant Shelbia is a violent predator who deserves every minute of his 20-year prison term. This is yet another illustration of how the federal firearms laws can be excellent tools in our collective fight against violent crime.” He praised the joint task force effort and vowed to keep targeting violent repeat offenders who threaten community safety.
ATF-Baton Rouge Resident Agent-in-Charge Antonio L. Pittman emphasized interagency cooperation: “The conviction and sentencing of Derrick Shelbia displays the commitment all law enforcement agencies have for the citizens of Louisiana.” He credited the partnership between federal, state, and local agencies for dismantling Shelbia’s criminal run before more lives were endangered.
Shelbia will serve a mandatory 20-year prison term followed by five years of supervised release. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cal Leipold, who secured a conviction that ensures Shelbia will remain behind bars during his prime years of criminal activity—another win in the federal crackdown on gun crimes committed by violent felons.
