Baltimore, Maryland – In a disturbing case of armed carjacking, a Glen Burnie man has been sentenced to 5 years in prison. Deverey Hasani-Jarod Kelley, age 25, was found guilty of carjacking a woman who was in labor and on her way to the hospital.
According to the evidence presented in court, Kelley and his co-defendant Cornell Robinson pointed guns at two individuals on Copeland Street in Annapolis, Maryland, on March 2, 2014. The victims were planning to go to the hospital because the woman was in labor. The male victim managed to flee and called the police, while Kelley and Robinson forced the woman at gunpoint to a residential building nearby, demanding money.
The woman repeatedly told them that she was in labor and did not have the key to the residence. When it became clear that she could not get into the residence, Robinson took her car key and left in the victim’s car. Officers from the Annapolis Police Department arrived and pursued the stolen car into Eastport. Kelley threw out a loaded handgun at the corner of Tyler Avenue and Hilltop Lane, which was recovered by police.
Rod J. Rosenstein, United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, commended the FBI, Annapolis Police Department, and Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for their work in the investigation and prosecution. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bonnie S. Greenberg and Patricia C. McLane, who prosecuted the case.
Kelley’s 5-year prison sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz. The sentence also includes 3 years of supervised release. Kelley’s co-defendant, Cornell Louis Robinson, is scheduled for sentencing on November 13, 2015, and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for carjacking, life in prison for possession and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and 10 years in prison for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.
The case highlights the importance of community vigilance and quick action by law enforcement in preventing and responding to crimes. It also underscores the severity of the consequences for those who engage in such heinous acts.
