RICHMOND, Va. – The grimy underbelly of Richmond saw its latest chapter unfold as Devon Kennedy, a 23-year-old from Waldorf, Maryland, was sentenced to 87 months in prison for his role in a brazen illegal firearms trafficking scheme.
Kennedy, a convicted felon, had traveled repeatedly to Virginia between April 28 and May 23, 2016. His plan was audacious: he directed his cousin to purchase 16 firearms and extended magazines, doling out cash and precise instructions for the types of weapons he sought.
Once his cousin made the purchases, Kennedy took possession and transported them back to Maryland, where he sold them on the street to various buyers. His luck ran out on May 26, 2016, when Kennedy was arrested in Prince George County while carrying one of the three pistols purchased for him. The other two firearms had already been sold.
U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente and ATF Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Boxler announced the sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas A. Garnett leading the prosecution.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal gun trafficking and the commitment of law enforcement to combat such activities.
