Grimy Times has learned that Devon Smith, age 24 of Greenville, Pennsylvania, has been charged with a serious crime after a prior felony conviction. According to federal authorities, Smith was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition on December 22, 2021.
The indictment, which was handed down by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, alleges that Smith possessed a firearm and ammunition after a prior felony conviction. This serious offense carries a maximum sentence of up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The investigation leading to the return of the indictment was a collaborative effort involving the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime.
Under the United States Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed on Smith would be based on the seriousness of the offense and his prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Craig W. Haller and Special Assistant United States Attorney/Mercer County Assistant District Attorney Shane T. Crevar are handling the prosecution of this case on behalf of the United States.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing laws related to gun possession and the consequences of violating them.
