Devon Williams, Mailing Threatening Communications, Pennsylvania 2014
In a shocking case of intimidation, former Pennsylvania state prison inmate Devon Williams, age 25, pleaded guilty to mailing a threatening letter to a Monroe County Common Pleas Judge.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced the plea deal today, revealing that Williams admitted to mailing the letter from State Correctional Institution in Albion, Pennsylvania, in January 2014.
The letter, which threatened harm and death to the judge, prompted an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Williams was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2014. Judge James M. Munley scheduled sentencing for March 24, 2015.
According to United States Attorney Peter Smith, Williams faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Williams is currently detained in federal custody pending sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is prosecuting the case, which has left many in the community shaken by the brazen act of intimidation.
Williams’ guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, which highlights the severity of the threat posed to the judge and the importance of protecting the judiciary from harm.
