In a disturbing case of gun violence, 29-year-old Devonte Oye Robertson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for possessing firearms as a convicted felon.
According to court documents, Robertson was found to be in possession of two firearms, a Sig Sauer and a Smith & Wesson pistol, on January 19, 2024, despite having been convicted of two felonies.
Robertson pleaded guilty to the charges on August 14, 2024, and was subsequently sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams to 24 months’ imprisonment.
The sentence also includes a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term, with no parole option available in the federal system.
The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a community-based initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods.
The program, launched in 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The investigation into Robertson’s case was a collaborative effort between the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael S.A. Hudson.
