Disturbing Video Surface: Czornyj’s Tragic Encounter With Police

New York Attorney General Letitia James has released shocking body-worn camera footage from the tragic encounter that led to Brian Czornyj’s death. The video, obtained as part of an ongoing investigation, captures a chilling moment during which officers were forced to fire their weapons.

On June 5, 2025, Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (TPPD) officers responded to a 911 call regarding an alleged sword attack. The footage shows two men holding a Samurai sword; Brian Czornyj, the younger man, appeared uninjured and held the handle while the older man held the blade.

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, neither man complied. The situation escalated as one officer discharged his service weapon, hitting Mr. Czornyj. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead later that day. The older man sustained injuries and was released the same night.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident where a police officer may have caused death by act or omission, regardless of on-duty status or the decedent’s circumstances. This assessment led to a thorough investigation into the officers’ actions.

The Attorney General’s Office emphasizes that this footage is not indicative of guilt or innocence but serves as part of their transparency efforts in such matters. The public is warned that the video contains disturbing content and is intended for mature audiences only.
