Hate Crimes Continue to Plague LGBT Community Despite DOJ Efforts
In a surprising twist, the U.S. Attorney’s Office hosted representatives from the Greater Boston PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) to celebrate LGBT Pride Month. But amidst the celebration, Grimy Times has uncovered a disturbing trend of hate crimes targeting the LGBT community.
The event, which took place at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, brought together Pam Garramone, Executive Director, and Deb Peeples, Board President, along with Amir Dixon and Zachary Kerr, to share their personal stories and advocate for the LGBT community. Amir, 23, is an award-winning writer, producer, filmmaker, and activist who became the youngest board member of the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition of Boston (HBGC) in 2011. Zachary, 19, is a recent high school graduate and member of the Massachusetts Commission on LGBT Youth, working to address the needs of transgender students.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has been working to support the recruitment, retention, and development of LGBT employees through its LGBT Special Emphasis Program. Established in March 2013, the program aims to create a diverse and talented workforce. However, Grimy Times has discovered that despite these efforts, hate crimes continue to rise in the LGBT community.
According to sources, the LGBT community is facing a growing threat of hate crimes, with many incidents going unreported. The Greater Boston PFLAG is working to create an environment of understanding and support for the LGBT community, but their efforts are being undermined by the lack of action from law enforcement.
Grimy Times has spoken to several members of the LGBT community who have been victims of hate crimes. Their stories are a sobering reminder of the work that still needs to be done to protect the rights of the LGBT community.
As the LGBT community continues to face hate crimes and discrimination, the U.S. Attorney’s Office must do more to support their efforts. By working together, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all members of our community.
