A Little Rock felon, Dominic Session, will spend the next 17½ years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. Jonathan D. Ross, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, announced the sentence, handed down by United States District Judge James M. Moody, Jr.
Session, 31, of Little Rock, pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on May 10, 2019. The conviction was based on an April 2017 incident in which Session fled from a traffic stop and dropped a black object as he ran. During a search of the area where Session was running, police located a Ruger 9mm handgun.
At Monday’s sentencing hearing, Judge Moody heard evidence regarding Session’s six prior felony convictions, including three convictions that qualified Sessions as an Armed Career Criminal—second degree battery, robbery, and residential burglary. The Armed Career Criminal distinction increased Sessions’ potential penalty from a maximum of 10 years in prison to a minimum of 15 years. Judge Moody also sentenced Sessions to five years of supervised release to follow his prison sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.
The investigation was conducted by the Little Rock Police Department with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Session’s lengthy prison sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As Acting U.S. Attorney Ross noted, ‘this sentence demonstrates the commitment of this office to hold accountable those who would put our community at risk by violating these laws.’
The case is a result of the ongoing efforts of the Little Rock Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to combat firearms trafficking in the Eastern District of Arkansas.
