Dominique Brand, Kidnapping, Carjacking, Murder, South Carolina 2021

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA – A local man’s life will be forever changed as Dominique Brand, 31, is set to be sentenced in federal court on Friday, February 3, 2023, for a heinous crime that shocked the community.

According to reports, Dominique Brand’s trail of destruction began on Sunday, March 28, 2021, when he entered the home of an 80-year-old woman, Mary Ann Elvington. Using a shotgun, he forced her to drive him from her house to Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, and back into South Carolina.

Later that evening, Brand drove Ms. Elvington to a remote crossroads in Marion County and walked her behind the abandoned Zion Grocery store. In a chilling display of violence, he held the shotgun to the back of her head and pulled the trigger, executing her. Ms. Elvington’s body was discovered the following evening, March 29, 2021.

After learning he was a suspect, Brand turned himself in to authorities on March 31, 2021. United States District Judge Sherri A. Lydon presided over the trial, which resulted in a conviction for kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, and using or carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence in a manner constituting murder.

Brand faces a penalty of life imprisonment on each count. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 3, 2023, at 10:00 am in the McMillan Federal Building, Courtroom 1, located at 401 West Evans Street, Florence, South Carolina.
