A shocking case of public school embezzlement has come to an end in Detroit, Michigan. Domonique Campbell, a 39-year-old former Detroit Public Schools teacher, has been sentenced to three years in prison for her role in a massive fraud scheme.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Campbell, along with her mother Sandra Campbell, 60, a former DPS contract accountant and School Board candidate, conspired to embezzle over $530,000 from the school district between 2004 and 2008. The scheme involved placing orders for books and educational materials with their sham company, but never providing the goods to the schools.
The money laundered through the scheme was then used to fund the defendants’ own lavish lifestyles. Campbell’s mother was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison in December 2013 for her role in the scheme.
U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook imposed the sentence on Campbell, who was found guilty of program fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and tax charges after a five-week trial in August 2013.
The case was investigated by special agents of the FBI, IRS, and Department of Education, Office of Inspector General, with the assistance of Detroit Public Schools, Office of Inspector General.
U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade warned that anyone who considers defrauding public schools should take note that the authorities are scrutinizing records and conduct, and will prosecute those who steal funds intended to educate our children.
The FBI’s Detroit Field Office, along with local, state, and federal partners, will continue to battle public corruption and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
