Don A. Maigari, Attempt to Possess and Distribute Methoxyacetylfentanyl, Ohio 2024

Ohio Man Indicted for Fentanyl Trafficking

A Munroe Falls man has been indicted on charges of attempt to possess and distribute methoxyacetylfentanyl, a highly potent and deadly synthetic opioid.

Don A. Maigari, 36, was arrested on a federal complaint after receiving shipments of the fentanyl analogue from China last month. Packages containing the drugs were shipped to an apartment in Akron, and Maigari retrieved the package on October 13, according to court documents.

The indictment alleges that Maigari attempted to possess and distribute methoxyacetylfentanyl, a substance that is chemically similar to fentanyl but has been linked to numerous overdoses and deaths.

If convicted, Maigari’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violations. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.

The matter is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron P. Howell following an investigation by the Akron Police Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Homeland Security Investigations.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Maigari is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Maigari’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of law enforcement’s role in preventing the flow of these deadly substances into our communities.
