Dontrail Xavier Roundtree, a 24-year-old Atlanta man, is headed to federal prison for nearly 12 years after a violent carjacking at a College Park gas station last year. On January 26, 2016, Roundtree walked up to an unsuspecting driver, flashed a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and demanded the keys to the victim’s car. With no hesitation, he fled in the stolen vehicle, launching a dangerous crime spree that put innocent lives at risk.
Within minutes, a witness called 911, triggering a response from College Park Police. An officer attempted to stop the stolen car, but Roundtree refused to yield. Instead, he accelerated onto I-285 and led police on a high-speed chase, clocking speeds near 130 miles per hour. The reckless pursuit endangered motorists and first responders alike, carving a path of terror through metro Atlanta’s busy highway system.
The chase ended in disaster when Roundtree lost control and crashed the vehicle into a ditch while exiting the interstate. He abandoned the wreck and bolted on foot, pursued by officers through debris and traffic. When caught, he didn’t surrender—instead, he turned violent, kicking one officer repeatedly as they tried to cuff him. The physical struggle underscored the brazenness of his actions from start to finish.
Roundtree, of Atlanta, Georgia, pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted on November 7, 2016. U.S. District Judge Steve C. Jones handed down the sentence of 11 years, nine months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The judge’s ruling reflects the severity of the armed carjacking and the broader threat Roundtree posed to public safety.
“Roundtree victimized an innocent citizen and placed the lives of other citizens and police officers in danger when he led police on a high-speed chase,” said U.S. Attorney John Horn. “The public can rest easier knowing that law enforcement put an end to Roundtree’s crime spree.”
ATF Special Agent in Charge Wayne Dixie added, “The sentence that Roundtree received represents the seriousness of his crime, and this is just another example of ATF’s commitment in combating violent crime to protect our communities.” The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jolee Porter.
