Memphis, TN — A loaded Mossberg rifle found in a Nike backpack during a screaming domestic row has landed 27-year-old Donya Davis behind bars — again. Davis pleaded guilty this week to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a federal crime that carries up to ten years in prison.
The trouble erupted on October 11, 2020, when Memphis Police stormed a unit in the 2300 block of Ketchum Road after a 911 call from a terrified mother. She reported her daughter was barricaded in a bedroom with Davis, who was threatening her with a weapon. Officers heard shouting before they even reached the door. Once inside, they spoke with B.C., the mother of Davis’ children, who gave consent to search the apartment.
Hidden in plain sight — inside a Nike backpack — cops uncovered the loaded rifle: one round in the chamber, 20 more ready in the magazine. Davis waived his Miranda rights and admitted he had the gun. But as a convicted felon with prior domestic assault and felony aggravated assault convictions, he’s barred under federal law from possessing any firearm or ammunition.
At the time of the incident, Davis was already wanted on outstanding warrants for domestic assault and probation violation. The discovery of the weapon escalated the case into federal jurisdiction. Now, he’s staring down a potential decade in prison without the possibility of parole — a hard truth in the federal system.
Sentencing is set for March 10, 2022, before U.S. District Judge Sheryl H. Lipman. Davis could face up to ten years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. No second chances. No early outs.
The case was investigated by the Memphis Police Department and the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Task Force, a federal initiative aimed at dismantling violent crime through coordinated local and federal enforcement. Prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel D. Winnig — on loan from the Shelby County DA’s Office — the conviction underscores the feds’ crackdown on armed felons in high-risk domestic situations.
