HATTIESBURG, MS – Sadie Bradley, 66, of Waynesboro, Mississippi, is facing federal prison time after admitting today to a decade-long scheme to steal over $197,000 from the United States government. Bradley pled guilty before Senior U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett to one count of theft of government funds – a direct hit to taxpayers and a slap in the face to those legitimately relying on Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
According to court documents, Bradley’s brazen double-dipping began in October 2008 and continued for a full nine years, concluding in October 2017. She illegally pocketed a total of $197,216.11 in SSI benefit payments she wasn’t entitled to. The scheme hinged on a calculated manipulation of the Social Security system, utilizing not one, but two social security numbers.
The feds uncovered that Bradley originally obtained a social security number under the name Sadie McCornell way back in 1966, beginning to receive SSI payments in 1974. But that wasn’t enough. In 1976, she fraudulently applied for and received a second social security number, this time under the name Sadie McConn, later legally changing it to Sadie Bradley. For years, this second identity remained dormant, a loaded weapon waiting to be used.
In 2008, Bradley activated that weapon, applying for and receiving SSI payments under her second social security number – while still collecting benefits under her original number. She deliberately concealed her true identity, income, resources, marital status, and living arrangements from the Social Security Administration, effectively creating a phantom recipient to funnel even more money into her pockets. This wasn’t an accident; it was a cold, calculated act of theft.
U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Marvin Mauldin, Resident Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General, announced the guilty plea. Bradley is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Starrett on October 2, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. She’s looking at a maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release, and a hefty $250,000 fine. Expect a full reckoning for this years-long deception.
The case was skillfully investigated by the Social Security Administration-Office of Inspector General, with prosecution handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Paul Fortenberry. This investigation demonstrates that even complex schemes to defraud the government will be uncovered, and those responsible will be held accountable. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case through sentencing and beyond.
