James Aubin, 46, of Dover, walked into a Bank of New Hampshire branch on Central Avenue last July and walked out with cash after demanding money at the teller window — a crime caught on camera and now sealed with a guilty plea in federal court.
Aubin pleaded guilty on April 23, 2019, to one count of bank robbery, admitting before a U.S. District Judge that he committed the holdup, according to court records and statements made during the hearing. The robbery occurred on July 12, 2018, when Aubin approached the teller, made his demand, and was handed an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency before fleeing the scene.
Investigators didn’t need long to close in. Surveillance footage from the bank was broadcast by local news outlets, and within days, law enforcement had a positive ID on Aubin. After being apprehended, he confessed to the crime, admitting his role without hesitation.
The case was pursued by federal prosecutors as part of a broader crackdown on violent street crimes in New Hampshire. U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray made it clear: “Bank robberies are violent crimes that can inflict fear and endanger bank employees, patrons, and the public.”
Murray vowed continued coordination with law enforcement to prosecute those behind such brazen acts. “As part of our effort to combat violent crime, we will work closely with our law enforcement partners to prosecute those who are responsible for bank robberies in the Granite State,” he said.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Dover Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Krasinski handled the prosecution. Aubin is scheduled to be sentenced on July 31, 2019, and faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, under federal law.
