Dr. Hafeez Kahn, Medicare and Medicaid Fraud, Rhode Island 2010

Dr. Hafeez Kahn, a former Rhode Island physician, will pay $1.2 million for fraudulent billings to Medicare and Medicaid, authorities announced today.

According to a settlement agreement, Kahn and his corporations, U.S. Care Inc. and U.S. Care Pain Clinic LLC, overbilled the healthcare programs for services provided to some patients and falsely submitted claims for services never performed between August 2006 and December 2010.

The settlement requires Kahn to make an immediate payment of $500,000 within 10 days and annual payments of $175,000 plus interest for the next five years beginning on or before September 1, 2014.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Rogers and R.I. Assistant Attorney General James F. Dube handled the matter, which was investigated by the United States Attorney’s Office, the Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat healthcare fraud and protect taxpayer dollars.
