Local Doctor Sentenced for $2 Million Tax Evasion Scheme
ATLANTA, Georgia – Dr. Michael Jon Kell, 68, of Powder Springs, Georgia, has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison for his role in a two-decade-long tax evasion scheme.
According to court documents, Dr. Kell, a successful consultant and inventor, generated millions of dollars in income from his patented technologies and consulting work. However, instead of paying his taxes, he claimed to be a minister under a vow of poverty and directed his income and assets into bank accounts belonging to the First Meliorite Church, a church he founded and controlled.
Dr. Kell used these accounts to cover all of his personal expenses, including overseas vacations, dining out, high-end clothing purchases, online dating services, and private school tuition for his children. He also transferred ownership of his multi-million dollar residence in Vinings several times over the years to various entities he created and controlled, in an effort to protect the property from creditors, including the Internal Revenue Service.
The scheme, which spanned over two decades, was uncovered by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and Special Enforcement Program. Dr. Kell was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Eleanor L. Ross to one year, six months in prison. He was also ordered to pay $321,878.40 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynsey M. Barron.
