A 32-year-old man from Albuquerque has been sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a car crash that seriously injured two passengers. Gregory Secatero, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The crash occurred on January 17, 2015, in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, when Secatero’s vehicle collided with another car. Two passengers, a female and a child, were ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries, including a punctured lung and rib fractures for the female, and a subdural hematoma and femur fracture for the child. Two other children in the vehicle were not seriously injured.
Secatero, who was intoxicated at the time of the crash, was subsequently indicted on March 10, 2015, and charged with two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of child abuse for endangering the lives of three children. The case was investigated by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shammara Henderson.
In entering his guilty plea, Secatero admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol, which caused the crash and the resulting serious bodily injuries to the two passengers. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison followed by up to three years of supervised release.
The sentencing hearing for Secatero has yet to be scheduled. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the consequences of such reckless behavior.
The Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety worked closely with federal authorities to bring Secatero to justice for his role in the crash.
Secatero’s guilty plea and sentencing serve as a warning to others who may engage in similar behavior.
