Baltimore, Maryland – In a stunning turn of events, James Robert Hensler, 24, from Dundalk, has pleaded guilty to the dangerous act of aiming a laser pointer at a police helicopter over Baltimore.
The plea was announced by United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein; FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen E. Vogt; and Baltimore County Police Chief James W. Johnson, highlighting the gravity of Hensler’s actions.
Stephen Vogt, FBI Special Agent in Charge for the Baltimore Division, warned, “Pointing a laser at a pilot creates an undeniable danger for everyone on board that aircraft. We ask the public to contact us with any information about similar incidents.”
Chief Johnson of the Baltimore County Police Department emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “This is a serious matter, as it threatens the lives of those on the aircraft as well as people on the ground. The crew of the Baltimore County Police helicopter was lucky to escape with their lives.”
Court documents reveal that on September 30, 2014, Hensler aimed his laser pointer at a police helicopter over Patapsco High School. After being questioned and denying involvement, Hensler admitted using the laser to see how far it would shine.
Hensler faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for March 25, 2015. Rosenstein commended the FBI and Baltimore County Police Department for their diligent work in the investigation.
