Duraid Hussein, Stolen Firearm Possession, AZ 2018

Duraid Hussein, 25, of Glendale, Arizona, was sentenced to 54 months in federal prison on May 7, 2019, for illegally possessing a stolen firearm. The Iraqi national, who entered the U.S. as a refugee, was convicted by a federal jury on December 6, 2018, on one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a charge that carries stiff penalties under federal law.

Hussein’s criminal conduct dates back to July 2017, when he sold a stolen firearm to another individual. As a convicted felon—following a May 2017 conviction for aggravated assault—he is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. The sale and possession of the weapon triggered a federal investigation that peeled back layers of disturbing behavior and ideology.

During the probe, federal agents discovered Hussein regularly watched extremist propaganda videos online. Recorded conversations captured him making statements about being called to fight the Jihad—an alarming pattern that raised red flags with counterterrorism investigators. While no direct terrorist attack was planned, his sympathies and rhetoric were deemed significant enough to amplify the severity of his sentencing.

U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow handed down the 54-month sentence in Phoenix, emphasizing the danger posed by felons armed with stolen weapons and the added concern of radicalization. Hussein’s connections to violence and extremist ideologies were central to the prosecution’s argument for a substantial prison term.

Upon completion of his sentence, Hussein will be subject to removal from the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has already initiated deportation proceedings, given his status as a non-citizen convicted of a felony and his ties to extremist rhetoric.

The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, and ICE. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lacy Cooper and Matthew Binford prosecuted the case in the District of Arizona, Phoenix, securing a conviction that underscores the federal crackdown on illegal firearms and terrorism-adjacent crimes.
