KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Christopher A. Durant, 38, has been charged in federal court for the devastating arson of Beyond Thee Four Walls Ministries on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City asserts that Durant ignited a fire at the building located at 5910-5916 East U.S. Highway 40, destroying the religious sanctuary. Firefighters responded to the alarm at 3:25 a.m., only to find the one-story commercial structure engulfed in flames.
An affidavit supports the charges, detailing how Durant was caught on surveillance footage throwing asphalt and setting fire to objects through the mail slot and broken window of the church. ATF agents linked an accelerant at the scene to Durant’s actions.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, agents arrested Durant walking on Van Brunt Boulevard with marijuana in his possession. The 38-year-old stands accused of a crime that has left the Kansas City community in shock.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Morgan is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by multiple agencies. Operation LeGend, a federal partnership focused on reducing violence in Kansas City, is also involved.
Durant’s charges are merely accusations, and guilt must be proven in court. The community awaits justice for the destruction of their place of worship.
