Recording Artist DMX Charged with Tax Evasion
Earl Simmons, the internationally known recording artist and performer known professionally as "DMX" and "X," has been charged with tax evasion in a Manhattan federal court.
According to the indictment, Simmons earned millions of dollars from his music recordings, concert performances, and television shows, but failed to pay $1.7 million in federal income tax liabilities between 2002 and 2005. The indictment also alleges that Simmons orchestrated a scheme to evade payment of his outstanding tax liabilities between 2010 and 2015, largely by maintaining a cash lifestyle and avoiding the use of a personal bank account.
Simmons was arrested by law enforcement agents today and will be presented tomorrow in Manhattan federal court before United States Magistrate Judge Andrew J. Peck.
"For years, Earl Simmons, the recording artist and performer known as DMX, made millions from his chart-topping songs, concert performances and television shows. But while raking in millions from his songs, including his 2003 hit "X Gon’ Give it to Ya," DMX didn’t give any of it to the IRS," said Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim.
The indictment alleges that Simmons used various methods to conceal his income from the IRS, including by filing a false affidavit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Simmons also allegedly refused to tape the television show "Celebrity Couples Therapy" until a properly issued check he was issued was reissued without withholding any taxes.
Simmons faces tax evasion charges, including failing to file personal tax returns and failing to pay his fair share of taxes. The exact date of the crime is not specified, but the indictment alleges that Simmons engaged in the scheme between 2010 and 2015.
Simmons’ real full name is Earl Simmons, and he is a defendant in the case. The exact criminal charges against him are tax evasion, including failing to file personal tax returns and failing to pay his fair share of taxes.
Simmons is currently in custody and will be presented in Manhattan federal court.
The indictment was unsealed today in Manhattan federal court, and Simmons will face the consequences of his actions as required by law.
