Edgerton Doc Faces 54-Month Sentence for $13M Medicare Fraud Scheme

MADISON, WIS. – The grim streets of Edgerton were left reeling as local physician Dr. Ravi Murali, 39, was sentenced today to a staggering 54-month federal prison term for masterminding a $13 million Medicare fraud scheme.

Dr. Murali’s deceitful ploy involved authoring thousands of fraudulent orders for Durable Medical Equipment (DME), which were then used by others to bilk Medicare out of an astonishing $26,000,000. The government coffers were emptied by a staggering $13,000,000.

Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson made it clear that Dr. Murali’s sentence was not only about punishment but also deterrence, emphasizing the need to protect Medicare and other federal programs from similar schemes. The judge cited Dr. Murali’s previous disciplinary actions by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board for presenting a fraudulent diploma as evidence of his deceitful nature.

The investigation that led to Dr. Murali’s conviction was a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary J. Corey was at the helm of the prosecution, ensuring justice for the taxpayers who lost millions.
