Kansas City, Mo. — Edward Latimore, 46, is facing federal charges after allegedly pulling a .22-caliber Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistol and threatening to kill a KFC employee on August 8. The incident unfolded at the fast-food joint located at 3014 Independence Blvd., where Latimore was confronted for urinating in the rear of the property — sparking a volatile chain of events that ended with a loaded firearm in police hands.
According to a sworn affidavit, after being challenged by the employee, Latimore left the area only to reappear at the drive-through window. The two exchanged heated words, and Latimore allegedly lifted his shirt to reveal the pistol tucked in his waistband. The affidavit states he drew the weapon, pointed it directly at the employee, and made a clear threat to kill. Witnesses say the atmosphere turned toxic in seconds, with staff scrambling for safety.
One quick-thinking KFC worker managed to snap a photo of Latimore during the standoff. That image became a critical piece of evidence. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department, acting on the tip and photograph, tracked Latimore down as he walked northbound on the east side of Gladstone Boulevard. They found the Sig Sauer in his waistband and a loaded magazine with 10 rounds in his left pants pocket.
Latimore is a convicted felon with prior felony convictions for assault and armed criminal action — convictions that legally bar him from possessing any firearm or ammunition under federal law. The charge of felon in possession of a firearm, filed Monday, Aug. 10, in U.S. District Court, carries severe penalties, including up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Alford and was jointly investigated by the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This arrest falls under Operation LeGend, the federal-local initiative launched in 2020 to combat violent crime surges in Kansas City. The operation is named in honor of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was fatally shot during a year of record-breaking violence.
The criminal complaint against Edward Latimore remains an accusation. No evidence of guilt has been established. A federal trial jury will ultimately determine his fate, weighing the evidence presented under the strict mandates of federal law. For now, Latimore sits in federal custody, awaiting his day in court.
