Kansas City man Dennis T. Hart, 55, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing a firearm.
According to court documents, Hart was arrested on April 7, 2013, after a report of an outside disturbance at 29th and Prospect in Kansas City. He allegedly punched a victim in the face and pulled out a loaded Lorcin .380-caliber pistol tucked into his waistband.
When the victim drove away, Hart got on a bus and left, but officers later located him along the bus route. During his arrest, Hart struggled with the officers and pulled out the firearm, dropping it on the ground.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone with a felony conviction to possess any firearm or ammunition. Hart has a history of prior felony convictions, including possessing a controlled substance, distributing a controlled substance, forgery, assault, tampering, and fraud.
Hart pleaded guilty on September 17, 2013, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce E. Clark, with assistance from the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The case is part of Project Ceasefire, a cooperative initiative by federal and local law enforcement and the Kansas City Crime Commission that targets individuals who unlawfully use or possess firearms. Project Ceasefire was launched in October 1999.
Hart’s 20-year sentence serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As the investigation and prosecution of Hart’s case demonstrate, law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to keep communities safe and hold offenders accountable for their actions.
Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, praised the efforts of the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for their work on this case.
