Odenville Man Charged with Possessing Pipe Bomb
BIRMINGHAM – A federal indictment has charged an Odenville man with possessing a pipe bomb, a crime that could land him behind bars for up to 10 years and cost him $10,000 in fines.
Edward Shane Dempsey, 39, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday for possessing a destructive device, a pipe bomb, in St. Clair County on August 24, 2016. The indictment alleges that Dempsey did not register the pipe bomb in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, as required by law.
The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Dempsey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case was investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Assistant U.S. Attorney James Weil prosecuting the case.
An indictment is only a charge, and it will be up to the court to determine the defendant’s guilt or innocence. Dempsey’s case is currently pending in U.S. District Court.
According to the indictment, Dempsey possessed the pipe bomb on August 24, 2016, in St. Clair County. The indictment does not provide any further details about the circumstances surrounding the possession of the pipe bomb.
Dempsey’s case is a reminder of the serious consequences of possessing destructive devices, which can pose a significant threat to public safety.
