A Rapid City man has been charged with a serious crime. Ehoni Johns, a 21-year-old, has been accused of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender in South Dakota.
According to the indictment, Johns failed to register and update his registration as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. This is a federal offense with severe consequences.
The indictment alleges that between November 6, 2017, and January 6, 2018, Johns, a person required to register, did fail to register and update his registration. This is a serious violation of the law and puts the community at risk.
Johns appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 24, 2018, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, up to life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case. Johns was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The charge is merely an accusation, and Johns is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The court will determine the outcome of this case.
