SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A former office assistant for Kim’s Autobody, Inc. has been brought to justice for her egregious crime.

Elaine Eddington, a 54-year-old resident of the 1100 block of N. Hill St. in Springfield, was sentenced to 27 months (2 years, 3 months) in federal prison for defrauding the business and its owners of approximately $500,000 over a five-year period.

U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough handed down the sentence on July 7, 2017, and ordered Eddington to pay restitution in the amount of $505,834. Following completion of the prison term, she was ordered to remain on supervised release for three years.

Eddington was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the hearing.

The crime, which occurred between 2009 and 2014, involved Eddington using her position as office assistant to embezzle funds, which she used to pay personal debts and expenses.

Eddington pled guilty to three counts of mail fraud related to her embezzlement on Mar. 3, 2017.

The investigation was conducted by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan D. Freres prosecuted the case.

Kim’s Autobody, Inc. has suffered a significant financial loss due to Eddington’s actions, and the business and its owners are seeking justice and restitution.
