Jeremy L. Cruz, 39, of Elyria, Ohio, is behind bars on federal child pornography charges after law enforcement found a missing 14-year-old girl at a residence tied to him in Sheffield Lake. Cruz was taken into custody without incident in the early hours of April 18, 2019, following a multi-state manhunt sparked by the disappearance of the juvenile from Santa Maria, California.
The hunt began after the Santa Maria Police Department issued a public plea for help locating the missing teen, who had vanished on April 15. Investigators quickly uncovered that the girl had been communicating online with an adult male—later identified as Cruz. Digital trails led authorities across state lines, culminating in a predawn operation at a family member’s home in Sheffield Lake around 3:30 a.m. on April 18.
Inside the residence, agents from the FBI’s Cleveland Division, alongside officers from Sheffield Lake and Avon Lake Police Departments, found both Cruz and the missing girl. The teen was unharmed and swiftly reunited with her family in California. Cruz was immediately detained and booked into local custody, pending federal transfer.
During a forensic examination of Cruz’s cell phone, investigators discovered multiple images believed to be child pornography. The digital evidence formed the basis of the federal charge: interstate transport of child pornography. Authorities confirmed the material was transmitted across state lines, triggering federal jurisdiction.
Cruz was transferred to federal custody on the morning of April 19 and is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan D. Greenberg for his initial hearing. He remains held without bond as the case proceeds in the Northern District of Ohio. If convicted, he faces severe penalties, including mandatory registration as a sex offender and decades in prison.
This joint investigation was conducted by the Santa Maria Police Department, FBI – Los Angeles Division, Sheffield Lake Police Department, Avon Lake Police Department, Elyria Police Department, Lorain Police Department, and the Cleveland Division of the FBI. Prosecution is being handled by the United States Attorney’s Office – Northern District of Ohio. A charge is not evidence of guilt. The government must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
