PHILADELPHIA – In a shocking twist, 31-year-old Katherine M. Harrell was sentenced to 70 months in prison for her role in a brazen embezzlement scheme that stole over $500,000 from United Savings Bank, where she worked as a branch manager.
Harrell’s downfall began when she lied to a U.S. District Court Judge during a previous sentencing hearing in February 2012. In a desperate bid to get a lighter sentence, Harrell fabricated a heart-wrenching story about her brother being hospitalized and her young child being placed in foster care if she could not care for him. However, it was all a lie.
Harrell’s parents were alive and had agreed to take care of her child if she were sent to jail. The judge, Anita Brody, was duped by Harrell’s false pleas and sentenced her to just one day in prison, followed by supervised release. But when the truth came to light, Harrell’s world came crashing down.
On December 17, 2012, Harrell pleaded guilty to corruptly influencing the due administration of justice. In a move that sent shockwaves through the courtroom, U.S. District Court Judge Eduardo Robreno handed down a harsh sentence of 70 months in prison, ordering Harrell to undergo substance abuse treatment and pay a $500 fine.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Karen L. Grigsby leading the prosecution. The investigation revealed that Harrell’s lies had not only deceived the court but also put her own child at risk.
As Harrell begins her 70-month sentence, she is left to ponder the consequences of her actions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the harsh penalties for those who seek to manipulate the justice system.
