Bangor, Maine – In a shocking case of identity theft, Emelita Ignacio Arindela, a 43-year-old woman from Mount Desert Island, Maine, and previously of the Philippines, pleaded guilty to passport fraud in U.S. District Court.
According to court records, in 2000, Arindela assumed the name and date of birth of her older sister in order to marry a U.S. citizen in the City of Valenzuela, Philippines. In 2002, she entered the United States under her sister’s identity. Later that year, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen using her sister’s identity.
The defendant faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. She will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
The case was investigated by the Diplomatic Security Service of the U.S. Department of State.
Arindela used her sister’s identity to apply for a U.S. passport in 2010, which is a serious crime that can have severe consequences. The defendant’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and a willingness to deceive authorities.
The full extent of Arindela’s involvement in the case is still unclear, but it is evident that she has committed a serious crime that will not go unpunished. We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
The investigation into Arindela’s activities is ongoing, and it is likely that she will face additional charges in the future. Her guilty plea is a significant development in the case and demonstrates a willingness to cooperate with authorities.
