Emma Mills, Tax Conspiracy, New York 2014

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a shocking case of tax fraud, 38-year-old Emma Mills of Buffalo, New York, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to file false claims with the Internal Revenue Service before U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. Mills’ plea comes after an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service’s Special Agents, under the direction of Toni Weirauch, Special Agent in Charge.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross revealed that Mills conspired with others to defraud the Internal Revenue Service by creating false and fictitious W-2 forms. The fabricated W-2’s were submitted to the IRS with false tax returns, on which undeserved refunds and tax credits were claimed.

As part of her plea agreement, the defendant agreed to pay $35,519.00 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, and $6,976.00 to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

The exact details of Mills’ scheme are still unclear, but it is evident that she played a significant role in the conspiracy. With her plea, Mills has taken a step towards accountability for her actions.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 14, 2014, before Judge Arcara. The outcome will be a deciding factor in determining the extent of Mills’ punishment.

The conviction serves as a warning to those who attempt to defraud the system. It is a reminder that tax evasion and related crimes will be taken seriously and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
