A 36-year-old Emmetsburg woman was handed a 27-month prison sentence for unlawfully possessing a firearm, a move designed to curb violent crime and gun violence in the community.
Andrea Crystal Lee, 36, was sentenced May 2, 2024, to more than two years in federal prison after a December 19, 2023, guilty plea to Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
The evidence presented at the sentencing hearing revealed that on January 24, 2023, Lee was on state probation for a controlled substance offense. During a routine probation check, a state probation officer discovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in Lee’s Emmetsburg home.
Law enforcement officials obtained a search warrant, and a thorough search of the property was conducted. In the course of the search, a loaded 9mm handgun, ammunition, and magazines were found concealed in a floor vent.
As a convicted felon and drug user, Lee was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. Her actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a willingness to put herself and others at risk.
Lee’s sentencing is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors to reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration with law enforcement and community-based organizations.
The case was investigated by the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorneys Patrick T. Greenwood and Kraig R. Hamit prosecuted the case.
