Equinox Hit with $600,000 Fine for Cancelation Fraud

New York – The Equinox Group, LLC (Equinox), a fitness empire including Equinox, Equinox+, and SoulCycle brands, is facing a $600,000 penalty for systematically obstructing membership cancellations. New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed the settlement during a press conference today.

Attorney General James accused Equinox of failing to disclose subscription terms clearly, not providing consumers with required post-purchase acknowledgments, and making cancellation processes excessively complex. The investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) uncovered that Equinox’s practices were in direct violation of New York law.

Under the terms of the settlement, Equinox Group must pay a penalty of $600,000. Additionally, it is mandated to provide refunds of up to $250 to subscribers who faced difficulties canceling their memberships between February 9, 2021, and December 31, 2024. New York subscribers with valid claims may receive up to $100 in restitution.

The settlement also requires Equinox to overhaul its subscription policies, obtain informed consent for automatic renewals, and improve the accessibility of cancellation information. Customers must email specific addresses by August 2, 2025, to claim their refunds.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of this victory for consumers: “New Yorkers should be able to cancel a membership they no longer use or want without breaking a sweat,” she said. The AG’s office has been on a mission to protect customers from hard-to-cancel subscriptions, previously taking action against SiriusXM in December 2023.

This matter was handled by Assistant Attorney General Gena Feist and Laura Mumm, who have been instrumental in the investigation and settlement process.
