New York – The Equinox Group, LLC has been penalized $600,000 by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for making it difficult for New Yorkers to cancel their fitness memberships. The settlement is a result of Equinox’s failure to adhere to clear disclosure of subscription terms and an accessible cancellation process.
Attorney General Letitia James highlighted the company’s policies, stating that New Yorkers should have the ease of cancelling a membership without undue difficulty. Equinox Group was also found to lack transparency in its subscription terms and did not secure informed consent for automatic renewals, nor provided post-purchase acknowledgments as required by New York law.
Under the settlement, Equinox Group is required to enhance its disclosure practices and offer refunds of up to $250 to eligible subscribers who attempted but were unable to cancel their memberships between February 9, 2021, and December 31, 2024. Subscribers needing to file for restitution should email specific addresses provided by August 2, 2025.
This resolution is part of Attorney General James’ broader initiative in protecting consumer rights against hard-to-cancel subscriptions. The OAG has previously taken action against SiriusXM for similar issues, resulting in a court decision finding the company’s cancellation process unlawful.
Assistant Attorney General Gena Feist and Laura Mumm handled this matter for the OAG. The Equinox Group must also implement changes to their subscription practices and ensure clear disclosure of cancellation information.
