SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a shocking case of human trafficking, Ergys Metashi, a 34-year-old commercial truck driver from Albania, has been indicted for alien smuggling. According to the indictment, Metashi agreed to smuggle an alien into the United States from Canada in exchange for payment.
On March 31, 2015, Metashi allegedly brought the alien into the United States at the port of entry at Alexandria Bay, New York. The alien was found hiding under a blanket in the sleeping compartment of Metashi’s tractor trailer.
Law enforcement officials at the border arrested Metashi, who now faces one count of bringing an alien into the United States without authorization. If convicted, Metashi could spend up to 10 years behind bars.
The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Michael F. Perry handling the prosecution. Magistrate Judge Andrew T. Baxter ordered Metashi to be detained pending trial.
Metashi, who lives and works in Canada, allegedly agreed to smuggle the alien into the United States for a fee. This disturbing case highlights the dangers of human trafficking and the importance of strong law enforcement efforts to combat it.
The charges against Metashi are mere accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the fact remains that Metashi’s actions could have serious consequences for himself and the alien involved.
