U.S. Navy employee Eric Jex, 29, of Uniondale, New York, has pleaded guilty to accepting more than $250,000 in cash bribes for unauthorized liquor purchases from the Navy Exchange Service Command.
According to court documents, Jex worked as a supervisory sales associate at the NEX at Mitchel Field in Garden City, New York. His responsibilities included preparing and processing retail transactions and making decisions on large liquor orders and shipments from the NEX’s warehouse.
Jex was also subject to policies limiting access to the NEX’s goods to authorized personnel, such as Navy service members, and requiring NEX employees to check purchasers’ IDs.
Between November 2015 and December 2016, Jex agreed with three unauthorized purchasers to arrange repeated large purchases of liquor from the NEX. In exchange for his cooperation, the three purchasers paid Jex cash bribes, typically $5 to $20 per case of liquor.
Prosecutors allege that Jex’s bribes added up to more than $250,000 for the period of the scheme.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the U.S. Treasury Department, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Criminal Investigations Division investigated this case.
Jex is scheduled to be sentenced on February 2, 2018.
