New York Attorney General Letitia James has secured a $450,000 settlement from three companies selling eufy home security cameras. These companies—Fantasia Trading LLC, Power Mobile Life LLC, and Smart Innovation, LLC—failed to secure consumers’ private videos, leaving them accessible to outsiders.
Investigations by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) revealed that video streams from the eufy cameras were not always encrypted, allowing anyone with the relevant link to access the content without authentication. The settlement requires these companies to strengthen data security measures and pay $450,000 in penalties and costs.
Attorney General James emphasized the importance of home security systems: “New Yorkers buy home security cameras to protect themselves and their homes,” she stated. “The eufy cameras’ poor data security allowed anyone to access people’s security camera footage, defeating the purpose of having a home security system.”
The OAG’s investigation was prompted by a 2022 disclosure from a security researcher that the eufy products’ claims about security and encryption might not be accurate. The settlement requires the companies to maintain comprehensive information security programs, use secure software development processes, and implement appropriate encryption measures.
This latest action follows previous efforts by Attorney General James to protect New Yorkers’ personal information. In recent months, she has secured substantial fines for data breaches at other companies, demonstrating a commitment to holding businesses accountable for poor data security practices.
