MOBILE, AL – In a harsh reminder of the consequences of violating federal gun laws, Kelvontae Brown, a 32-year-old Mobile, Alabama man, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon.
The sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge Callie V. S. Granade, who made it clear that Brown would face serious consequences for his actions. According to court documents, Brown plead guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm in January 2024.
The incident that led to Brown’s arrest occurred in March 2023, when concerned neighbors called 911 because Brown was acting erratically and was in the street with a firearm. Members of the Mobile Police Department arrived on the scene, took Brown into custody, and collected the Glock pistol he had attempted to hide nearby.
Brown admitted to possessing the firearm and attempting to hide it. His prior convictions for domestic violence and theft offenses, as well as his current status on state probation, made this offense all the more egregious. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the Mobile Police Department, investigated the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.
At sentencing, Judge Granade imposed a 30-month sentence of incarceration and a three-year term of supervised release upon Brown’s discharge from prison. Brown will also be required to undergo a mental health evaluation upon release. This sentence serves as a warning to those who would disregard federal gun laws and put their communities at risk.
Brown’s case is a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the need for law enforcement to take a tough stance on gun violence. The Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives worked tirelessly to bring Brown to justice, and their efforts have made our communities safer for everyone.
This case is also a testament to the effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhoods in reducing violent crime and gun violence. By fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities, we can create safer neighborhoods for everyone.
