Tampa, FL – A former Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy is facing federal charges for allegedly using excessive force on a prisoner during an arrest in 2014.
Jesse Alan Terrell, 33, was indicted for violating the civil rights of ‘D.P.’, an unnamed victim, by repeatedly striking, kneeling and kicking the victim in the head, neck and shoulder area.
According to the indictment, the brutal assault occurred on August 7, 2014, while Terrell was working as a deputy sheriff with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, ‘D.P.’, suffered bodily injury as a result of the assault, which is alleged to have been carried out by Terrell during an arrest.
Terrell faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Terrell is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Terrell is not the only one from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office to face charges in connection with the incident. Four other deputies, Cody Hoppel, Adam Crawford, James Amidei, and Trevor Fitzgerald, have each pleaded guilty to federal civil rights violations and are awaiting sentencing.
The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Jacksonville Division and is being prosecuted by U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III, and Mark Blumberg and Maura White of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section.
