St. Louis, MO — Darren Randal Wilson, former president of the Ethical Society of Police (ESOP), was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for stealing over $80,000 from the police officers’ union he was sworn to protect. The fall of Wilson, once a trusted leader among law enforcement ranks, marks a sharp descent into criminal betrayal.
Wilson, of St. Louis, Missouri, pleaded guilty in September to all nine counts of wire fraud tied to a calculated scheme that spanned from July 2013 to December 2014. As president of ESOP, he had legitimate access to the union’s bank account—funded by monthly dues paid by rank-and-file officers. He exploited that trust, funneling more than $80,934 for personal gain, including financing comedy shows at local nightclubs featuring nationally known comedians.
Court documents reveal Wilson used electronic wire transfers—via Fed Wire, PayPal, and Western Union—to move stolen funds, leaving a digital paper trail that federal investigators eventually followed. To cover his tracks, he fed false financial reports to ESOP officers and members, fabricating legitimacy while draining the organization’s coffers.
As part of his guilty plea, Wilson agreed to a full restitution judgment of $80,934. He also surrendered his law enforcement certification permanently, barred from ever serving as a police officer again—a symbolic end to a career built on public trust.
U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey handed down the sentence, underscoring the gravity of a public servant weaponizing his position for profit. The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department—a bitter irony given Wilson’s former role leading a police association.
Assistant United States Attorney Cristian M. Stevens prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, delivering a clear message: corruption within law enforcement will be met with federal consequences. Wilson now begins his prison term, followed by three years of supervised release.
