New York – Former flight attendant, Emily Thompson, 32, from Los Angeles, California, pleaded guilty today to a felony charge of theft of property. Thompson admitted to systematically removing cash from the wallets of passengers during flights, accumulating over $50,000 in stolen funds.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Thompson worked for a major airline and used her access to secure areas of the aircraft to target unsuspecting travelers between 2023 and 2025. The investigation revealed that she would discreetly pocket cash from wallets left unattended during meals or while passengers were using the lavatories.
Thompson was caught after a female passenger reported her missing wallet containing $1,000 in cash on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. An initial search of Thompson’s belongings uncovered additional cash. Subsequent searches at Thompson’s home and workplace revealed several hundred thousand dollars in stolen funds.
Upon conviction, Thompson faces up to 20 years in prison, fines, and restitution orders. The airline has implemented enhanced security measures, including mandatory random bag checks during flights, to prevent similar incidents.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the trust placed in aviation employees and the importance of vigilance against internal fraud within the industry.
Thompson is scheduled for sentencing on April 15, 2026. The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges anticipated against Thompson and her alleged accomplices.
