New York – In a stunning reversal of fortune for a former police officer, Tyler Paul, 25, from Queens County, was today sentenced by New York Attorney General Letitia James for the tragic death of Kawan Edwards on the Grand Central Parkway. Paul pleaded guilty on December 11, 2024, to Criminally Negligent Homicide and Assault in the Second and Third Degrees.
Officer Paul was off-duty when he caused a fatal accident by speeding and failing to signal during a lane change, resulting in a high-speed collision with Edwards, a DOT contractor. The impact propelled Paul’s vehicle into Edwards, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) investigated this incident, deeming it worthy of a full probe. Today, Paul was sentenced to concurrent terms for each charge: one to three years for criminally negligent homicide; three and a half years with three years of post-release supervision for second-degree assault; and 364 days for third-degree assault. The defendant waived his right to appeal.
On April 26, 2023, Paul’s reckless actions on the Grand Central Parkway not only took a life but also tarnished the reputation of law enforcement. His plea agreement reflects the gravity of his actions and the loss suffered by Edwards’ family.
The New York Attorney General’s Office remains committed to ensuring justice for all victims, including those affected by off-duty police misconduct. This sentence serves as a stern reminder that there is no immunity from the law, even for members of law enforcement.
