Carolina Guerreno, Embezzlement, Connecticut 2019

HARTFORD, CT – Carolina Guerreno, 50, of Fairfield, is trading her luxury lifestyle for a federal prison cell. U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea sentenced the former Chief Financial Officer to 24 months imprisonment today, followed by two years of supervised release, for systematically pilfering $1,532,207.24 from her employer.

The scheme, spanning from January 2019 to February 2021, involved Guerreno abusing her position at a Shelton-based financial services firm. As CFO, she controlled the company’s finances, a power she brazenly exploited to funnel funds into her own pockets. Court documents reveal Guerreno altered transactions and directed electronic payments to her credit cards, personal bank accounts, and even to pay down her home equity line of credit.

This wasn’t a desperate grab for survival; this was a calculated spree of self-enrichment. Guerreno splashed the stolen cash on home improvements, high-end furniture, a luxury automobile, and extravagant European vacations. She also invested in a time-share condominium at a Vermont ski resort, jewelry, and – adding insult to injury – her children’s college savings accounts. The money also went towards paying off her home mortgage, ensuring her financial comfort while robbing her employer.

Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, didn’t mince words. Judge Shea ordered Guerreno to make full restitution, though she’s only managed to claw back approximately $400,000 to date. The remaining $1.13 million remains outstanding, a debt she’ll be working to pay off long after her release.

Guerreno pleaded guilty on August 30, 2022, to one count of wire fraud, a charge that carries a hefty penalty – one she’s now facing. The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by the U.S. Secret Service, the Wallingford Police Department, and the Connecticut Financial Crimes Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Miller prosecuted the case, ensuring Guerreno faced justice.

This case serves as a stark reminder that even those in positions of trust are not above the law. Guerreno’s greed led to her downfall, and now she’ll have two years to contemplate her choices behind bars. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
